Getting Children’s Attention

The use of technology to enhance learning in Anakum community is an effective approach for our organization to impact many children. Students with learning disabilities are experiencing greater success as they are allowed to use their abilities (strength) to work around their disabilities (challenges).

Our approach in using assistive technology tools enabled us to combine the best of both of these practices to improve social impact. The use of assistive technology to inspire learning which in some instances doesn’t cure or eliminate learning difficulties among our beneficiaries, but to a large extent helping them. Most especially, helping a child to reach his/her potential because it allows the child to capitalize on his/her strengths and bypass areas of difficulty.
Our Example from the field: a student who struggles with reading in Anakum but has a good listening skill is benefitting today through our audio-visual learning.

Our audio-visual learning is allowing our beneficiaries in Anakum to listen to text which we made available in a variety of formats, such as audio cassettes, CDs, and MP3 downloads. We have special playback units on all our computers in our learning center which allows users to search and book mark pages and chapters.

Our optical character recognition

This technology allows us to scan printed material into a computer where the scanned text is then read aloud via screen reading system.

To transmit voice directly to the user’s ear.

Instructional software

Used to teach specific academic skills (like reading and writing) to provide instruction rather than bypassing areas of difficulty
